Capt. S. Chandler Sims II

United States Marine Corps
Casady Young Alumni Achievement 2011

Chandler Sims was honored in 2011 with Casady's Young Alumni Achievement award, which recognizes the graduate from the last 15 years who renders service to his university or community, and excels in a profession or pursuit of education.
"All of this is possible because of the foundation that was cemented on these 80.8 acres here at Casady," Chandler said. "The academics were constantly challenging, and the curriculum coupled with an all-world faculty here at Casady has enabled me to do so much that would have otherwise not been possible. Although it wasn't all acedmics all the time, I was fortunate to be afforded the opportunity to have spiritual balance that daily Chapels provided. From senior speeches to daily sermons by Fr. (Max) Berry and Fr. (John) Marlin, Chapel offered time for spiritual reflection. There were athletics, football in particular, which has taught me probably more about the intricacies of leadership."

Chandler was a student-athlete at Casady and went on to play football at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in economics. He then joined the United States Marine Corps, where he completed advanced helicopter training and received his wings in 2006 and was promoted in August 2007 to his present rank of Captain. He performed two tours in Iraq where he flew combat missions, and in June 2011, Chandler reported to Quantico, VA, where he is assigned to Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) and serves as squadron pilot supporting the President of the United States. The Marine One squadron is responsible for the transportation of the president, the vice president, members of the presidential cabinet and other dignitaries.

"Chandler is a shining example for all of us and someone that I look up to," said Chad Reynolds '95. "His work ethic; his ambition; his strong sense of duty and faith; his dedication to excellence; they're all wonderful expressions of the Casady spirit."

Chandler’s awards include Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medals, Humanitarian Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Iraq Service Campaign Medal.
