Seniors Nominated for Presidential Scholars Program

Casady School Seniors, Calvin Tolbert and Philip Whitmarsh, have been nominated for the Presidential Scholars Program, the most elite scholastic program in the United States.
Students have the opportunity to become U.S. Presidential Scholars based on three paths of accomplishment. Each year more than 4,000 candidates are selected as nominees.

“Calvin and Philip are both exemplars of the scholarship, and they are exceptional in all that they do,” said Nathan L. Sheldon, Head of Casady School. “They have made prodigious contributions as members of our Casady Community.”

Application to the program is by invitation only. Calvin and Philip now have the opportunity to proceed through the application process to become semi-finalists and ultimately Presidential Scholars, who are named later this spring. Philip plans to matriculate to the College of Engineering at Cornell University, and Calvin will matriculate to Stanford University.

Casady School has had eight Presidential Scholar nominees since 2010:
2016: Shaan Patel (six-year medical program at University of Missouri, Kansas City)

2016: Connor Raikar (Washington University in St. Louis)
2015 Sydney Gibson (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
2015: Connor Dubé (Yale University)
2014: Defne Altan (Harvard University)
2012: Teddy Nollert (Rhodes College)
2011: Olivia Branscum (University of North Carolina)

In 2010, Garrett Zwahlen, was named as a Presidential Scholar and proceeded through the program. Garrett graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.

The Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Presidential Scholars will be announced in April.
