As a part of the curriculum, Casady requires all seventh and eighth graders to take Latin, and students may continue their study of the classical language through Upper Division.
Casady's Middle and Upper Division Latin students who are part of the Junior Classical League (JCL) attended the Certamen Spooktacular hosted at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School. A certamen is a quiz bowl, and students have several opportunities during the year to participate in various events including the JCL Convention in the spring. Faculty members Briana Titus, Jake Bryan, and Peter Hoffman accompanied the students.
As a part of the curriculum, Casady requires all seventh and eighth graders to take Latin, and students may continue their study of the classical language through Upper Division. Latin I-V is offered as a part of the UD curriculum.
Many of Casady's earliest graduates remember taking Latin and refer to it when they reminisce about the School. Former Headmaster, the late Dr. Robert B. Woolsey, hired David Gorham in 1964 to teach Middle Division Latin, which was to be part of a "Traditional Classical Curriculum" based on older New England models. Mr. Gorham, who is now Associate Head of School and has served in a number of capacities during his tenure, developed the Classical Civilization course in his second year at Casady.
"Latin is excellent for developing English, French, and Spanish vocabularies, and it is a very patterned and logical language so it is excellent for critical thinking," said Mr. Gorham. "It is good for discipline in study habits and is a solid foundation for languages, sentence structure, and grammar study."
