Science Olympiad Preparation and Competition Under Way

Casady's Science Olympiad program continues to grow as students in sixth through 12th grades choose to join the program to compete on a local, state, regional, and national basis, in various STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) ranging from astronomy and food science, to game design, computer coding, and wind power.
The Science Olympiad Program includes Division B (grades 6-9), and Division C (grades 10-12). This year, Casady has 35 Upper Division students participating in Science Olympiad - 28 in C Division and seven in Division B. There are 53 Middle Division students participating, but since there is overlap between our divisions and how the Science Olympiad Teams are outlined, seven students in Division B are ninth graders; therefore, Casady has five Division B teams for a total of 60 students. Overall, there are 88 Cyclones in the program. Not all the students compete in all the tournaments.

Students participating in Casady's Science Olympiad program work on their projects during the week and on Saturdays when they are preparing for a competition. Competitions are held around the state throughout the year and conclude with the the Oklahoma Science Olympiad State Tournament in March. The winners of the state tournament earn a spot to represent Oklahoma and compete at the National Science Olympiad Tournament in May. These dedicated students have earned multiple state championships the past few years. The Division C Team was state champion in 2015 and 2016, and Division B has earned the top state spot each year since 2012.

This past weekend, a small group from Casady traveled to the Norman tournament, which hosted 17 Division B teams. The Cyclones competed in 11 of the 16 events offered. In those events, Casady finished second overall, one point behind arch rival, Jenks. They earned first, second, or third place medals in six of the 11 events, and finished just off the podium in two additional events. Overall, B9 team placed first, B10 team placed third, and B8 team placed fourth. On Tuesday evening, the OKC Thunder recognized Oklahoma Science Olympiad at the game. Seniors Jackson Wilks and Jackson Davis represented Casady, along with Bob Melton (the state director), Dr. Beth Allen (from UCO), and Benton Shriver (coach from Putnam City).

Casady faculty include Shannon Semet and Aric Sappington as head coaches for Middle Division students and Lisa Bek-gran as the head coach for Upper Division. Jake Staats assists in MD and Eric Ebert in UD. Lu Taucer will also be helping with a chemistry lab this year, and Tom Lester shares duties as a bus driver and chaperone. If parents, other members of the Casady Community, professional colleagues, relatives, or friends would be interested in mentoring students in Science Olympiad events, they may contact one of the following:
