Aaron Sharpe '10

Young Alumni Achievement
Physicist and SIMES Associate Scientist at SLAC
Menlo Park, CA

Aaron Sharpe is a physicist and SIMES (Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences) Associate Scientist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where he leads a research group studying exotic electronic behavior in quantum materials.
He specifically focuses on heterostructures of atomically-thin crystals such as graphene. Such systems can be controllably assembled in ways where electrons interact strongly with one another, giving rise to unusual quantum phases including superconductivity, magnetism, and topological insulators.

After completing his Ph.D. at Stanford, Aaron went on to work at MIT and Sandia National Laboratory, developing both novel experimental tools and fabrication techniques needed to probe these materials at ultra-low temperatures.

His work has appeared in the journals of Science and Nature and includes the discovery of an entirely new type of ferromagnetism in twisted graphene systems.

In 2024, he received the William McMillan Award, one of the most recognized early-career prizes in condensed matter physics, for outstanding contributions to the field.
