LD Students Release Monarch Butterflies
Students from Mrs. Fryer's third grade class released monarch butterflies into Casady's Monarch Waystation, also known as the Butterfly Garden, this week. The monarchs, which started as caterpillars found in the waystation, were observed by the students in class as the caterpillars underwent metamorphosis.

The waystation, which was dedicated in 1999, provides milkweeds, nectar sources, and shelter for monarch butterflies as they migrate through North America. Oklahoma lies within the path of one of three major thoroughfares the butterflies use on their journey between Canada and Mexico.
The waystation's garden is being tended by Casady parent Jessie Provience and Grounds Supervisor Mark Coate. Mrs. Provience said that she was inspired to work on the garden and care for the monarchs by an experience she had in first grade.
"My first grade teacher raised monarchs," she said. "One day, I was watching the chrysalises, and I noticed them start to open. I yelled 'they're hatching' and all of the other students rushed over. That it something that has stuck with me over all these years, and I wanted to give that experience to my kids as well."
The monarch population will continue its southward migration to Mexico until mid-November, where they will hibernate until spring.
