Students Inducted to Cum Laude Society

Casady School inducted 16 new members to the Cum Laude Society on April 17.
The 10 seniors and seven juniors were chosen by a selection committee to be a part of the international honor society. Cum Laude recognizes scholarship and stresses excellence, justice, and honor. Election to membership in the Casady chapter is limited to no more than 10 percent of the junior class and 20 percent of the senior class.

New members from the senior class are: Isabel Alberola, José Alberola, Sahanya Bhaktaram, Catherine Dubé, Humza Razaq, Kamran Steppe, Kian Steppe, Brandon Trachtenberg, and Xiangyu Zeng. Juniors elected to Cum Laude are: Sara Jarjoura, Joseph Manfredo, Saadia Nazir, Reese Rhodes, Dylan Vasan, Nikki Weitzenhoffer, and Qin Xu. Those from the senior class who were inducted as juniors in 2018 include: Shaheer Aamir, Timothy Bryer-Ash, Katherine Cadzow, Claire Richardson, Daniel Schnabel, Whitney Thomas, and Abby Williams.

Students inducted to the Cum Laude Society have demonstrated excellence in their academic work, good character, honor and integrity in all aspects of their school life. Julieta Zesiger, Chair of the Science Department, is president of the Casady Cum Laude Chapter.

The Cum Laude Society is an international academic fraternity dedicated to honoring scholastic achievement in secondary schools. The founders of the society modeled Cum Laude after Phi Beta Kappa. The society's motto is "Excellence, Justice, Honor." Casady's chapter began in 1961.

At Casady, the primary criteria for election has been the quality of the curriculum the candidate has chosen and the number and enthusiasm of nominations made on behalf of the individual student by the Upper Division faculty and current Cum Laude student members. Each year, the selection committee asks the faculty and current members to nominate students who have demonstrated excellence in their academic work, good character, honor, and integrity in all aspects of their school life.

Mark McCubbin '74 addressed the Upper Division at a special Chapel assembly to celebrate our Cum Laude members. He spoke about the spirit of gratitude and the thankfulness he has for Casady School and the significant role it has played in his family's life. Mark and his wife Marta have two children, Sarah McCubbin Brown '05 and Alison McCubbin '06. His brother, David graduated in 1976, and his father, Richard McCubbin taught history in the Middle and Upper Divisions when he first joined Casady and eventually served as headmaster from 1980 to 1990.
