Computer Science Education Week and Hour of Code Around the World
Casady's Lower Division students spend time in early December in their computer classes working on programming, java script, simple website designs, and coding puzzles during the National Hour of Code.
Hour of Code is a worldwide movement to bring computer programming to tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries. Casady engages all students in experiencing how easy and empowering it is to learn programming and has participated in Hour of Code since its inception five years ago.

This project uses a variety of activities that allow students to create and share projects with code, while children of all ages develop computational thinking and programming skills. These young students are amazing in what they create and learn at such a young age in this ever-changing world of technology. All week long, students will engage in fun, collaborative activities and best of all, they will learn key programming concepts that Casady will build on in the future.
Special guests supporting Hour of Code at Casady include Aaron Krauss as the Chapel speaker to kick off Hour of Code and Rachel Kim who visiting Lower Division computer classes. Aaron Krauss is a programmer at Clevyr where he builds data-driven applications and games in Javascript, .NET, Ruby, Shell, and "anything else awesome. He also blogs regularly, plays a ton of video games, and loves legos." Rachel Kim is a Ph.D. student in the Educational Technology department at Oklahoma State University, where she also teaches an undergraduate “applications of educational technology” course.
As Casady continues to build its culture of Computer Science and STEAM Learning, the digital literacy skills necessary for students in the 21st century continue to grow as well. This is an important part of the Casady curriculum across all divisions.
Through participation in Hour of Code, Mrs. Vick and her students have earned posters and a classroom set of five Spheros, which are app-controlled robotic balls. Learn more about Hour of Code and the statistics in Computer Science programs around the world at: code.org
