The National Merit Scholarship Program began in 1955 as an academic competition recognizing exceptional academic achievement and awarding scholarships. High school students qualify by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which serves as the initial screening for approximately 1.3 million juniors at more than 21,000 schools across the country, while also meeting the program's published entry requirements.

Casady's semifinalists now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships. Of the approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, about 95% are expected to advance to Finalist standing, with finalists announced in February.
