Academic Initiatives in Lower Division

Dear Lower Division Families,

I am excited about the new strategic academic initiatives that we have recently discussed with you in our parent webinar, and I hope you are as well! We have been intentional and strategic in our planning to provide Lower Division students the opportunity to build foundational skills in Computer Science and to provide a cohesive Bible curriculum and Chapel service. As we have continued our focus on academic alignment and as new curriculum has been added, the need for consistent work time together is key to continued growth. The Wednesday Schedule next year will allow us time to provide the support and planning necessary for our faculty to continue to be intentional and purposeful in our strategic planning. Our united efforts will have a positive impact for our students and School. I would like to share with you how the changes will specifically impact the Lower Division.

First, Computer Science and our Bible class will be separated. This separation will allow students to double the amount of time they have in Computer Science during each special rotation. It is also important to note we are updating our Computer Science curriculum to align with the Middle and Upper Division curriculum. This backward design will provide students with an exceptional foundation in Computer Science and strong computational thinking skills.

Secondly, our regular schedule will remain the same except we will add a Bible class once a rotation. This class will be taught by Rev. Kirsten Baer and aligned with our Chapel service. This alignment allows for a more cohesive theological education. Students will be able to take the stories and concepts from Chapel and apply them in the classroom. It will also allow Rev. Baer to build deeper relationships with the students.

The Wednesday Schedule for next year will have a later start. The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. for all LD students. This later start for students will give our teachers much needed time for vertical and horizontal curricular work and collaboration. To make room for this time, our students will not have flex time during the day and recess will be shortened by five minutes. Our learning blocks will remain at 50 minutes each; SoulCraft Wednesday, Specials, and P.E, will continue as normal. Childcare will be provided in the morning for families who need to drop off their children early on Wednesday. Information on how to sign up for morning childcare will be provided in our communications in early July.

In closing, I would like to thank Dr. Merry Sorrells, Dr. Jason Scheer, Sandy Nelson, and Josh Bottomly for all of their support and hard work bringing these important initiatives to our Lower Division. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

In appreciation,

Montie Sill
