The Reverend Nontombi Naomi Tutu to Visit Casady

The Chapel Department is very excited to announce that on Monday, Feb. 26 The Reverend Nontombi Naomi Tutu will be the guest speaker for our Upper Division and Middle Division special assemblies.
Our faculty and students recognize this to be a wonderful opportunity for our community to engage one another in conversation around the topic of racial justice. As this is a conversation, the format for the assembly presentation will be that of an interview. Ms. Sarah Smith, Casady’s Interim Director of Service Learning and member of the Chapel Department, will facilitate the interview by inviting our special speaker to answer grade-level appropriate questions. As this is a community-focused event, we are asking our faculty and students to submit questions for Ms. Smith to ask Reverend Tutu during the assemblies.
 
The topic of racial justice and reconciliation is always a difficult one, and we hope to prepare our students with a proper understanding of our speaker’s unique perspective of these issues. Going forward, before Reverend Tutu’s visit, we will use specific chapel times to introduce such topics as Apartheid, Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Reconciliation, and other subjects relating to the history of racial justice in South Africa and the United States. If you and your student are interested in any of the topics discussed within Chapel, either regarding Reverend Tutu or any of the other topics, we encourage you to further the conversation within your home. If you need help finding material, any member of the Chapel Department would be glad to provide resources and information for these discussions. In the Downloads section below we have provided some resources that may be helpful to our families, as you navigate these conversations with your child.
 
Again, this is a wonderful opportunity for our students and faculty to hear from an individual who has a unique experience in the area of racial justice. Also included in the Downloads section below is a detailed biography of The Reverend Naomi Tutu and her proposed schedule.
