Lower Division Notes

Lower Division Notes

Dear Lower Division Parents,

We are pleased to share an opportunity this week for you to hear from Susan Resnick, a national math consultant and one of the authors of the Math in Focus curriculum that we use in grades 1-6. Susan has been working with our teachers over the last year and will be returning to campus this week. We set aside time for a parent presentation on Thursday, Nov. 6, in the Middle Division Benson Community Room, from 8:00-9:00 a.m. This presentation will be recorded for parents who are unable to attend.

Over the past four years, Casady has made thoughtful updates to our math program—first in the Lower Division and more recently in the Middle Division. These changes are designed to help students build strong fluency, deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts, and develop the perseverance and confidence needed for advanced problem-solving.

Math in Focus, a Singapore Math program, teaches the same procedural skills and fact fluency many of us remember, but it goes further—developing deep understanding and flexible problem-solving skills. More than 40 years ago, Singapore redesigned its national math curriculum to emphasize problem-solving and conceptual understanding over rote memorization. The results were remarkable: Singapore’s students now rank among the highest in the world in mathematics. Math in Focus is an adaptation of that approach for American students.

Our Strategic Academic Plan calls for learning that is durable and lasting. You will see your child memorizing and practicing familiar algorithms, math facts, and procedures. You will also see your child using bar models, drawing to represent problems, and using multiple methods to solve problems. When students only memorize rote procedures, those steps are often forgotten over time. When they understand the why behind the math, they can apply that knowledge flexibly to new and unfamiliar problems. This depth of understanding allows lasting mastery and true mathematical confidence, providing a strong foundation for advanced mathematics and for careers in fields such as mathematics, science, and engineering.

We know that many of you wish to better understand this curriculum as well as support your student.  We will share a recording of Susan’s presentation and some takeaways for parents after her visit. In the meantime, we would like to share some tips and reminders:

  • We recognize this approach is different from how most of us learned math, and it leaves parents less able to help students with portions of their math work. There are times when students will benefit from your help with familiar drills and procedures. They will also benefit from your encouragement as they work their way through complex problems, but there is no expectation for parents to be familiar with the methods and procedures students are taught in class.

  • Challenging problems build perseverance and deep reasoning. However, if you see the struggle has become unproductive, we encourage you to normalize their struggle, pause the work, and direct your child to communicate their questions to their teacher. This will help our teachers identify areas where their students are not yet ready to complete work independently or would benefit from adjustments to classroom instruction, homework assignments, or other assessments.

  • We are reinforcing the expectation that students use extra help sessions when needed, and we are ensuring students have the encouragement, time, and structure to do so.

We hope to see many of you at the upcoming session with Susan Resnick. Please stay in touch, and thank you for your partnership in supporting our students’ success in mathematics.

Picture Information
Individual retakes are this Thursday! Parents who ordered online after photo day will receive their photos by mail. Photos taken on retake day will be returned to the School.

If you missed ordering, you can contact J. Holland for your student’s access code and order online at the Casady section of our website. Online orders are slightly more expensive but offer the convenience of being sent directly to the home. Another option is to complete the order form delivered to the School and bring it in on retake day (even if they are not having a retake). If you have any questions, please contact J. Holland Photography.

Veterans Day
On Nov. 11, we will celebrate Veterans Day. Homeroom teachers are excited to showcase veterans near and dear to their students’ hearts. If you have a friend or family member who has or is currently serving and would like them celebrated in the classroom, please select a blank slide in your student’s grade level section in the 2025 Veterans Day Slideshow Google Slides presentation.
  1. Open the link in Google Slides to edit
  2. Find your student’s grade-level slide
  3. Select a blank slide from your student’s grade level and customize the slide using the information below.
*If you created a slide last year, they may be at the end of the presentation. Last year’s slides have been moved to the current grade level and adjusted to the new theme. Please confirm and/or update your slide. You also may want to swap pictures out of last year’s fourth graders.

Include a picture and the information listed below on your slide:
  • Student’s Name
  • Relationship to Student
  • Veteran’s Rank/Name
  • Service Branch
  • Honors/ Recognitions/ Medals/ Awards Earned
Please take the time to talk to your students about the sacrifices our service members make to ensure our freedom. If interested, you can find more opportunities here at Operation Gratitude.

First Grade Veterans Day Project
Our first graders will participate in the First Grade Veterans and Deployed Military Service Project on Nov. 1-8. It is November and time to remember the deployed military serving us overseas and local Veterans who have given so much for our freedoms.

Students will hear a class read-aloud book "Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood" to correlate with this service activity. Please go shopping with your student and bring in items to donate such as the following: individually wrapped candy, playing cards, small games, cell phone accessories, etc. Students will also make cards in class to send with the packages. Thank you for giving to others this holiday season.

Collect for All Saints
God of love and light, thank you for all the people who have loved you and shown us your way. Help us follow their example by being kind, brave, and full of your love. Keep us close to you and to each other, so that we can live as part of your big family of saints. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who shows us how to love forever. Amen.

    Violin Enrichment Class
Erin Ripka will be our new violin Instructor for our violin enrichment program this year. From teaching violin in private music schools to working at the Oklahoma Conservatory of Music, Erin has always had a passion for teaching this wonderful instrument at all levels of study. She is excited to bring her musical knowledge to Casady to teach our Lower Division students violin so that they too can enjoy learning the Violin. Learn more about Erin here in this bio.

This enrichment course aims to foster a love for playing the violin while developing strong foundational skills in posture, bowing, intonation, and rhythm. Students will learn to perform simple scales and pieces from the Suzuki repertoire. Through engaging activities, demonstrations, and performance opportunities, students will build confidence in a supportive and encouraging environment.

No music experience necessary. Required materials include renting/purchase of violin, violin shoulder rest. This is a year-long class, November-December and January-May. One Chapel performance will be in the spring semester. Parent pick-up each week is at 4:45 p.m.

Parents may sign up their students for this course by clicking here, logging into your account using the MyCasady button at the bottom of the page, and selecting the Fall Enrichment Course offerings. Classes will begin on Oct. 30 or Nov. 6 depending on enrollment.

    Universal Screeners
Casady School will participate in universal social-emotional and behavioral (SEB) screenings as part of a larger effort to enhance the health and wellness of Casady students. Universal screening is a process for identifying strengths, needs, and useful information so that students can be better supported in interventions that prevent or reduce challenges and promote resiliency. Screenings in the school setting are not used for diagnostic purposes but will help us understand and monitor the social and emotional functioning of our students. Screenings will be completed at the end of October.
    • The Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS-SEL) screener will be used for Primary and Lower Divisions.
    • The screenings will be completed by the homeroom teachers.
    • You will be notified by a member of our Student Support Services team, if the results indicate that your student could benefit from school-based interventions or parental consultation.
    • If this is the case, Samantha Kobs and/or Emily Morris-Sill will share the overall results with you and discuss ways you can get support for your student. You will not be contacted if your student is found not to need additional support.
    • Please complete this Casady SEB opt-out form if you do not want your student to be screened.
Reach out to Samantha Kobs with any questions.

    Happy Sunday!

The Casady Upper School Electric String Quartet brought joy and energy to the start of the school day by performing for Lower Division students during morning carpool last Thursday! The skilled ensemble, featuring Danzel Chen and Lauren Kim on violin, Isaac Moore on viola, Fahim Nazir on cello, and Mason McAllister on bass, created a welcoming atmosphere as young students arrived at school. Under the direction of Mrs. Heidebrecht, their electric string performance added a unique musical touch to the daily routine, showcasing the exceptional work within Casady's music program while fostering connection between the Upper and Lower Divisions. The quartet's thoughtful gesture exemplifies Casady's values of service and engagement, using their musical gifts to brighten the day for their younger schoolmates. It was a wonderful way to start our day!
We were also excited to have the cheerleaders, band, and football players greet our students on Friday! The energy was electric with smiles, high-fives, and music filling the air, creating an atmosphere of excitement and unity. Moments like these highlight the incredible benefits of having all grade levels on one campus. From our youngest learners to our student leaders, we are building a culture of connection, pride, and support. When students of all ages share the same space, it creates natural opportunities for mentorship, role modeling, and a sense of belonging that strengthens our entire school community. These interactions foster cohesiveness across our campus, reminding us that we’re all part of one team—whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the stands. These opportunities are more than just a greeting; they are celebrations of school spirit, tradition, and togetherness! Go Cyclones!

Prayer for Peace (attributed to St. Francis)

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
    where there is hatred, let me sow love;
    where there is injury, pardon;
    where there is doubt, faith;
    where there is despair, hope;
    where there is darkness, light;
    where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

    Dear Lower Division Parents,

Our safety drills last week went very smoothly, and we were so proud of how calm and responsible our students were. Practicing these drills helps students feel safe and confident, knowing exactly what to do in different situations. Their well-being is always our top priority.

It was so wonderful to see so many of you in the Powell Lower Division Building for Parent Conference Day! These conversations are a valuable opportunity to celebrate your student’s growth, share insights, and set goals together. We know that when School and homework are in partnership, students feel supported and are better able to thrive. Thank you for the time, care, and commitment you give to your student’s learning.

Last week, we welcomed Ms. Rayna Griffin. She is a student from Langston University who is completing her field experience. Ms. Griffin will observe in all grade levels in LD during the next two months. We are excited about our new partnership with Langston University.

Have a wonderful and blessed week!

    Dear Lower Division Parents,

This week is Safety Week. All Divisions across campus will be participating in Fire, Tornado, and Secure Campus drills. In Lower, we will practice evacuating our building for the Fire Drill and moving to our storm shelter building, Nichols Activity Center, for the Tornado Drill. For the Secure Campus drill, announcements will be made over our loudspeaker, but there will be no other interruption to our school day.

Drills can be an abstract concept for our young students, so we want to keep their focus on the concrete idea that grownups are here to keep us safe. When talking to your student about Safety Week, keep it simple. If they have questions, don’t lead, and let their questions guide the information you share. Be honest when answering questions, but do not offer more information than they are asking for. Teachers will use the following talking points to help prepare our students. You can use them as guiding language.

    General Talking Points:
    • Practicing these routines helps keep us safe at Casady.
    • If you are frightened, worried, or unsure what to do, your teacher is here to help.
    • Our teachers have a plan and know what to do to keep us safe.
    Fire Drill - Tuesday Morning
    • You will hear a loud buzzing noise. This noise tells us it is time to stop and look at your teacher.
    • You can leave your things just as they are and follow your teacher out of the building.
    • It is important that you stay with the teacher you are with.
    • When practice is over, our day will continue as normal.
    Tornado Drill - Wednesday Afternoon
    • You will hear an announcement over the intercom, like what we hear at carpool
    • Your teacher will lead your class to a room that keeps us safe in storms.
    • You can leave your things just as they are and follow your teacher out of the building.
    • It is important that you stay with the teacher you are with.
    • When practice is over, our day will continue as normal.
Listening Drill, Secure Campus/Lockdown - Thursday Unannounced
    • You will hear a voice over the intercom, like what we hear at carpool.
    • Stop and look at your teacher, they may ask you to sit with them and listen to a story
    • This practice is to help us remember that listening to our grownups will keep us safe
As always, if you have any questions or need any further resources, please let me know.

    Dear Lower Division Parents,

    Happy Sunday!

We are in full swing in Lower Division and looking forward to the First Grade Bible Presentation tomorrow. We have finished our beginning-of-the-year assessments and settled nicely into the school routine. We start direct instruction each day promptly at 8:00 a.m. with our morning meetings, an essential part of our day. The content of our morning meetings consists of word of the week study, curriculum review, and community-building activities. The students enjoy this time with their classmates and truly miss out if they are not in class. Please remember that students are marked tardy if they enter the classroom after 8:00 a.m. Mornings can be hectic, and we appreciate your efforts to make sure your student is in class and ready to learn by 8:00 a.m.

Thank you to all who helped stock the lounge, we feel very blessed. Have a wonderful and blessed week!

    Dear Lower Division Parents,

Another wonderful week is in the books! It was such a joy to see so many of you at Parent Information Night. We hope you found the time with our teachers both helpful and informative. It’s hard to believe how quickly the first quarter is flying by; it will be over before we know it!

A quick note about Patriots Day on Sept. 11; while it is listed on our school calendar and our flag will be flown at half-staff in observance, this is not a topic we will be teaching about or discussing in our division. If students have questions, we will kindly let them know that this is a conversation best shared at home with their families. Thank you for your understanding and for partnering with us.

    Dear Lower Division Parents,

We completed a successful first full week of school! When we visit the classrooms, it is wonderful to see the students actively engaged and happy!

This week in Chapel, we celebrated our Beanstack Summer Challenge readers. LD led all divisions with 133 readers logging 168,809 pages for the entire division, which earned us an out-of-uniform day for this Tuesday, Sept. 2. I know the students will enjoy another out-of-uniform day! Great job meeting our goal.

We want to acknowledge the highest page logger in each grade level:
    • First Grade: Olivia Read
    • Second Grade: Evan Picon
    • Third Grade: Vivian Jones
    • Fourth Grade: Nivaan Sahai
These students will soon be featured in the LD trophy case. All students who completed the summer challenge received an "I Love Reading," and four lucky winners won the drawing for a $50 Learning Tree gift card.

Check out Beanstack for a new challenge and to log pages read.

    Carpool Dismissal Reminders
Thank you for having your numbers displayed so that we can see them. This helps to shorten your wait time so we can safely dismiss students. Your attention to the following actions will keep our line moving during arrival and dismissal:
    1. Please pull as far forward as possible during arrival and dismissal.
    2. Please let us know if your student is seated on the passenger side so we can go around to help them get out.
    3. During dismissal, as you enter the circle drive, remember we have two lanes. Pull up as far as you can, then zip in every other car at the end of the lane before you approach the covered awning.
    4. If you need to buckle your student in, and there are no cars in front of you, please pull forward past the no-parking sign so traffic can continue to flow.

    Dear Lower Division Parents,

Our first few days have been a great success. Our students are doing an amazing job learning routines and procedures, and we are so proud of their positive attitudes and hard work. They are off to such a strong start and showing that they are ready to learn, grow, and bloom!

Thank you for reviewing and following our dismissal procedures, and we ask for your patience as we all make our dismissal procedure routine. Even though it is going well, each day the process will improve! One tip: if you are trying to exit campus and are not going to Middle Division, you can always turn left and continue straight to use the maintenance exit by the tennis courts. Please remember to always drop off in the circular driveway and not the parking lot. We want everyone to start and end the school day safely and with a smile!

It has been fun to watch the students interact, adapt to their new routines, grade levels, and welcome new friends. They seem very happy to be back at School, which brings us joy! We are here to support each of you. If you have any questions or would like to share information with us, always feel free to reach out. Thank you for sharing your sweet students! Have a wonderful and blessed week!

    With Gratitude,

    Montie Sill

    Arrival: 8:45-8:55 a.m.
    Start of School: 9:00 a.m.

    Parent Information Night
Thursday, Sept. 4, is Parent Information Night from 5:45-6:45 p.m. Please report directly to your student’s homeroom. Teachers will share information about their grade level curriculum, procedures, and special events. Our Specials Teachers will be located in their rooms. If you have any questions or would like to see their space. If you have questions and cannot attend, please feel free to email your teacher.

    Circle the State
Fourth grade parents, please review the Circle the State information.

    SoulCraft Wednesdays
As a reminder, this school year during our Wednesday Chapel (also known as SoulCraft) and classroom instruction, our faculty will be utilizing the Second Step curriculum, which is a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve students' social-emotional skills. This is a vital piece of our chapel program because Jesus said that the most important rules are to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves. These Second Step lessons help students learn how to love themselves and each other well.

During the months of August and September, your student will be learning more about Growth Mindset and Goal Setting. Students will learn how to pay attention, manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.

You will receive weekly communications from your student’s teacher to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. You will also be receiving “Home Links” at the start of each new unit. These one-page resources highlight the themes and research behind each unit, and include strategies that parents and caregivers can use at home to reinforce the unit’s social-emotional skills.
Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive Casady Community!

    Dear Lower Division Parents,

Welcome back to a new and exciting school year in Lower Division! We hope your summer was filled with rest, joy, and special moments with loved ones. A heartfelt thank you to CPO for the beautiful flower bar and for hosting our Work Week luncheon, it was truly appreciated and enjoyed! Thank you also for stocking our faculty lounge, we felt very spoiled and cared for.

This year, our focus will be Together We Bloom, a reminder that our greatest growth happens when we learn, work, and support one another. This theme reflects Lower Division's shared commitment to helping every student develop academically, socially, and emotionally.

To support this, our staff began the year with training on CliftonStrengths, a framework that helps us identify and build on our individual and collective talents. Our training will allow us to better connect with students, create stronger teams, and provide learning experiences that help each student shine.

This year, we will focus on helping every student:
    • Build on Strengths – Recognizing and developing each student’s unique talents.
    • Learn Through Challenges – Encouraging resilience, problem-solving, discipline, and a growth mindset.
    • Own Their Talents – Inspiring confidence and pride in who they are and what they can contribute.
    • Open Doors to Growth – Providing opportunities for exploration, creativity, and discovery.
    • Make a Difference – Fostering kindness, empathy, and a sense of responsibility in our community.
We’re excited to share that Mrs. Emily Morris welcomed a baby boy into her family over the summer! She will be on maternity leave at the start of the school year and plans to return by the end of September. In her absence, we have support in place to ensure our students continue to receive the care and guidance they need. If you have any questions or need assistance during this time, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Director of Student Support Services Samantha Kobs at (405) 749-3129.
    • As you visit about the first day of school, "First Day Jitters" is a great read-aloud as well as this resource.
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday at Orientation Day between 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your student’s teacher and explore their classroom. If you did not receive the Back-To-School Welcome Letter, please review it for important information.

We have fun information to share from our librarian, Mrs. Kendall: Aaron Reynolds, author of best-selling books "Creepy Carrots" and "Creepy Pair of Underwear," is coming to Casady on Sept. 4 to speak with students in second through fifth grades about his new chapter book, "Troubling Tonsils." Your student has an opportunity to purchase signed copies of Aaron Reynolds's books. Use this link to order signed copies of his books.

If you have questions about the author visit or the book purchase, please contact Laura Kendall.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Parent Information Night on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5:45–6:45 p.m. to learn more about our plans for the year and our curriculum. See you soon!

  • June 13 - Early Summer Reminders

    Dear Lower Division Parents,

    Summer Reading Challenge
We’re excited to kick off our Summer Reading Challenge through Beanstack, and we hope you’ll help us encourage your student to keep reading throughout the summer!

The challenge is simple: Read and log at least 400 pages over the summer, and your student will receive an "I ❤️ Reading" bracelet and have their name entered into a drawing for a Grand Prize: a $50 Amazon gift card. One lucky winner will be chosen from each grade level.
But that’s not all! We’re also working toward another school-wide reward.

35,000 pages logged collectively by Lower Division by July 31 = Out of Uniform Day

All reading must be logged in Beanstack to count toward individual and school-wide goals. Look for more information on how to use Beanstack from the email you received on May 21st, or in the Summer Reminders section below.

We are excited for our new families joining Casady and would love for them to participate in our reading challenge too! Currently, we do not have a way to add new families to Beanstack, but you are welcome to keep a paper log or track via the Metropolitan Library's summer reading program in Beanstack, and hopefully, we'll be able to sync the reading before school starts.

Let’s work together to make reading fun, help our students grow, and earn some awesome rewards! Thank you for supporting a summer filled with great stories and even greater learning.
